UTStarcom Establishes IPTV Technology Center, Center of Excellence

Sep. 23, 2009 (PR Newswire) --

India-based Centers to Drive Innovation and Growth in IPTV for the Company and Country

ALAMEDA, Calif., Sept. 23 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- UTStarcom, Inc. (Nasdaq: UTSI) today announced the launch of its Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) Technology Center and Center of Excellence in India. The IPTV Technology Center will take a lead role in the formation of India's IPTV regulation, and the Center of Excellence will provide post-sales support for all of UTStarcom's customers in the country. Both Centers are based in UTStarcom's Gurgaon office.

"UTStarcom created the IPTV Technology Center and Center of Excellence to develop and enhance standards for IPTV deployments in India," said Vijay Yadav, vice president and managing director of UTStarcom's South Asia operations. "UTStarcom is committed to IPTV growth in the country and we're applying best practices from our experience in India to similar scenarios in other regions. UTStarcom hopes that the Centers will make substantial contributions to India's IPTV portfolio in the years to come."

The IPTV Technology Center will focus on localization and customization of UTStarcom's IPTV products in India. UTStarcom's primary goal is to share global perspectives on IPTV implementation standards and identify synergies with potential IPTV partners for future deployment collaborations. The Center will also enable UTStarcom to analyze and conduct extensive background research on current market trends, opportunities and individual operator needs before the company enters into new customer agreements.

The Center of Excellence is an IPTV lab that will emulate the customer network and simulate customer-reported problems in various conditions. This will allow the company to modify its technology before it is deployed to create an optimal end-user experience.

UTStarcom's investment in these IPTV centers reinforces its commitment to helping customers achieve their operational and network efficiency goals. UTStarcom currently has IPTV contracts with leading service providers in India including Bharti Airtel in Delhi NCR, and with Aksh Optifibre for Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) in 20 cities across India and with Aksh Optifibre for Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) in Delhi and Mumbai. UTStarcom has also announced IPTV deployments with United Telecoms Limited in India and with SLT in Sri Lanka.
