UTStarcom Reaches $250 Million in Sales of Core Broadband Product

HONG KONG, April 14, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- UTStarcom (NASDAQ: UTSI), a global telecommunications infrastructure provider, has achieved a critical sales milestone for its packet optical transport products, the core of its broadband business, on the back of growing sales to customers in Asia and the Americas.

The Company announced today that it has sold over $250 million of packet optical transport products that form the backbone of telecommunications network infrastructure.

This milestone highlights the competiveness of UTStarcom's growing suite of packet optical transport products based on Multi Protocol Label Switch Transport Profile (MPLS-TP) and Carrier Ethernet (CE) technologies. UTStarcom has designed these products so that they are easy to deploy, improve network efficiency and support the roll-out of value added services on '4G' and 'next generation' networks. The company has recently announced sales of these products to national carriers in Japan, Taiwan, Brazil, Indonesia, Korea, etc.

"This achievement shows that we can compete on a global stage against industry heavyweights," said Mr. William Wong, Chief Executive Officer of UTStarcom. "We have established a competitive niche for UTStarcom through our innovative approach to product design and our strengths in commercializing technical breakthroughs that improve our customers' networks and enhance their market competitiveness."

Supporting Converged Network Infrastructures Worldwide

Another significant event in parallel to reaching the $250 million milestone was a smooth management system upgrade of a customer's network with over 5000 packet optical transport nodes. The objective of the upgrade was to support a "converged transport network" offering a broader range of '4G' mobile, broadband Internet and enterprise Ethernet lease line and VPN services. UTStarcom completed the upgrade on time with zero service interruptions.

The success of this large-scale upgrade sets the stage for UTStarcom to support similar initiatives worldwide as carriers look to build converged network infrastructures that support a greater array of services, especially for mobile and "on demand" features, which will help them retain and grow their customer base.

The packet optical transport products and solution are successor to UTStarcom Multi-Services Transport platform (MSTP) and first generation packet optical transport technology – Resilient Packet Ring (RPR) products which were widely deployed in Japan, India, Korea, Taiwan and China. Together with company's Multi-Services Access Network (MSAN), Fiber To The X (FTTx) and Wi-Fi solutions, it provides an ideal solution to support converged network infrastructures worldwide.

Harnessing In-House R&D and Manufacturing Strengths

UTStarcom's internal research and development initiatives have recently yielded several new products spanning packet optical transport, broadband access and network management systems that bolster its broadband business. The TN765 packet optical transport product, formally launched in March, is already in a commercial deployment and is expected to be in high demand because of key features such as its 1 Tb/s packet processing capacity, 10 Gigabit tunable laser and ability to support 100 Gigabit Ethernet environments. On top that, UTStarcom also develop their carrier grade Software Defined Networking (SDN) platform, coupled with packet optical transport and broadband access solutions, to efficiently serve the rapidly growing demand for bandwidth from cloud-based services, mobile, streaming and other applications.

UTStarcom also benefits from its in-house manufacturing capability that allows for product tailoring to accommodate specific customer needs and gives UTStarcom more control over product quality. The company's packet optical transport is showing a failure rate of less than 0.05% on monthly basis, significantly below those of large rival vendors, based on results from a large customer's network.

"We are setting new standards for the performance and reliability of broadband networking gear," said Mr. Wong. "These attributes underpin the growing demand for our products and will support the achievement of new sales milestones like the one we celebrate today."
